Dealing with this gnarly ass top!

Ok so this slab of claro walnut, which will become the top of the desk, has been sitting in a barn for almost 200 years. It is absolutely beautiful, but the thing is gnarly!!!! The grain pattern of claro walnut goes all over the place in every which way. This is what makes it so pretty, but it makes it tough as hell to plane flat. Start with the #6 then the #8 then a #4 1/2 with a 50 degree pitch...

and for those of you picking up on the inspiration for the design, yes this is my homage to the shakers and one of my absolute favorite furniture makers and designers, George Nakashima.
